What? A vlog!

For those who haven’t been around too long, I used to record “vlogs” – those are video blog posts of a sort. Mine are often silly, sometimes educational, and always just a bit odd. You can see more of them using the “Watch Vlogs” link in the tab called “Get Busy” on our site….vlogs are hosted over on my personal channel, and OWHtv is primarily what’s on the Operation Write Home channel.

My vlogs are often “Two things and a rant” – sometimes the rant is more of a story, or something else … today’s is a PSA!

One more thing…a heads-up about President’s Day weekend – that’s a week from now! We’ll be hosting a “VCMP” or a “Virtual Cardmaking Party”….that’s an online event, and you’ll come to this blog Saturday morning for details. We have bloggers each hosting a challenge idea they came up with, and we’ll link to their blog from ours. So you’ll go visit them, see what the challenge is and link up. The challenges will be open all weekend, so we hope you’ll have some fun time to join in and get creative!

Super cute vlog. Since I just started, I can look at cards I made in September and go “Really?”. I know I’m getting better but occasionally a really basic kinda thing comes out of my brain. The first bootcamp submissions are my most recent Meh stuff.

Oh, Sandy, yes, I have been afflicted with the Ikea effect also. I have decided to purge my little embellishments left over from other card kits, paper scraps and just ugly stuff so that I don’t fall victim as often! It seems to free me to start fresh and think clearly on a new design. Spring cleaning has hit my craft room! Thank you for your encouragement “to be all that we can be” in our CardART!!

  3. I recently went through a huge pile of my old cards and tossed them (well, kept what I could for new cards) as I thought they were horrible compared to what I’m making now (due to many tips from OWHtv, etc). I’ve also gone through and sorted out stuff I’ll never use – I have a tendency to buy something that looks cool and then forget how to use it as it’s sat around for ages. I don’t have any tips for ya, other than to think of someone looking at your supplies and wondering “why the heck did they get that?” and if you can’t answer – toss it! (or recycle or give to someone else)

  4. I think we’ve ALL experienced the “IKEA effect” at one time or another. My tips are much like Laura’s. I don’t feel compelled to use something that I got for free or won if it’s something I really don’t like or doesn’t fit my style. I no longer buy supplies in large quantities because inevitably even if I started out loving it I yearn for a change in what I am using and lastly I buy much, much less and instead focus on buying good quality supplies that I am sure I will use. That bargain is not a bargain just because it’s cheap. :)

  5. Ah yes! the “IKEA effect!” I too get really attached to various little scraps/images/supplies–even stamps–that are really not so great! I have major packrat tendencies, so I need to make a conscious effort to rid myself of these little vermin! I do try to use a critical eye when I’m packaging up cards for OWH. I have one more quality review then to make sure nothing ships that I am not proud of.
Thanks for a new Vlog, Sandy! They always include little pearls of wisdom!

  6. I’ve had that with scrapping and cards, but also with books, when I get to the point I finally accept that I have to delete a scene, which may be the very one that sparked the story idea in the first place. In writing, we call it the need to “kill your darlings.” That’s where editors can become helpful. Because they’re not emotionally wedded to it, so they can point out when something you may love doesn’t really belong.

  7. I completely understand the IKEA effect. My cards have slowly improved over time. I just tell myself it is just paper so if it doesn’t work, just scrap it. I spent the entire month of January just making scrap cards, which forced me to evaluate some of my stash. I need to keep at the purging. I am getting better at not buying so much. Thanks for the rant!
