Featured Friday Card Maker: Marcia H, Seattle WA (via Brazil!)

This week I get to introduce you to Marcia – she’s from Brazil originally, from a city called Sao Carlos, and has been living in the Seattle area for about 7 years now. She has no blog…”I thought about starting a blog once but gave up the idea because in many ways I still feel like a beginner, I know I have so much to learn… I think it’s better to leave the blog thing for people who have more knowledge to share and more experience than I do.” Maybe your comments can help convince her to take the leap! -Sandy

-How long have you been stamping/card making?

About 4 years.

-Do you have a craft room or specific area where you stamp/craft?

Yes. My craft room is my sanctuary. Whenever I’m there I forget about my problems and just focus on doing something positive and expressing myself. Cardmaking is my therapy.

-What are your favorite stamp/craft products?

That’s a hard question to answer… it’s like choosing a favorite child! I equally love all my stamps, and dies, and ink pads, and… everything else really.

-Do you have a favorite  technique?

I’m not good at coloring with Copics, so I try to compensate that by using other techniques to add color to my cards. With a stencil, blending tool and some distress inks you can make such beautiful and colorful backgrounds and it’s so simple to do. I think we should never be discouraged by our weaknesses. We have to find our strengths and develop them even further.

-Have any particular OWH sketches or tutorials served as inspiration for your cards?

When I started making cards for OWH, I had never made cards before. I was just beginning and my cards were… well, not that good. I really have to thank Sandy and other cardmakers for all the wonderful tutorials they made that helped me learn and grow so much.

-Do you prefer digis or stamps?

Can you believe I never used a digi in my life? Never. I just use stamps.

-Do you have a favorite theme?

I love making Christmas cards. But I find it hard to make Christmas (or Winter) cards when it’s warm and sunny outside!

-Are there colors you love to include on your cards?

I love red. I like to use color combinations that include red: red/green for Christmas cards, red/pink for Valentine’s and Love cards, red/white/blue for patriotic cards, red/craft/brown for more masculine cards…and so on.

-How did you hear about Operation Write Home?

OWH was featured (more than once, I think) on the Cardmaker’s magazine. I first read about OWH on the “Reader’s Reach Out” column.

-What motivates you to make cards for our heroes?

For me it’s a way to give back to the country where I live and that I learned to love deeply. America has given me and my husband so many opportunities and we are so grateful to be able to live the American dream. My heart breaks for all the heroes and their families who have to go through so much loss, sacrifice and pain. I’ll miss OWH when they finally finish their mission, but I’m relieved that so many heroes are back home and back to their families.

  1. You absolutely have talent for creating!

This is the best bunch of kraft cards I have ever seen. They are clean, sophisticated and beautiful. I usually think of kraft as more primitive, “Americana style”, but these have proven to me they are whatever you want them to be! Thank you for that-it has expanded my thinking!

I love all of them…not just like, but love. And I like your feeling about red as a color. It is a wonderful one! I also see I need to use more brown! And you are so good with the straight layering!

“I think we should never be discouraged by our weaknesses. We have to find our strengths and develop them even further.” -powerful thought I wont be forgetting soon.

Thank you for all you do for OWH-I know the people who get your cards are going to be very happy!

  2. You do beautiful work, Marcia! I agree with you about knowing your strengths and building on those. Very smart. Thanks for sharing your cards!

  3. Simple, yet beautiful!!

  4. Your cards are just gorgeous, Marcia! Such beautiful colors and sentiments. I have pinned some of them to my Pinterest boards for inspiration! “My heart is ever at your service.” is such a lovely sentiment! Thank you so much for supporting OWH. ♡

  5. Beautiful cards! very crisp and clean. Love the one with the heart stencil. I have it and need to use it. Great job and thanks for supporting the troops..

  6. Marcia, from another Brazilian, I thank you deeply. My son is going into the Army and I know how I will treasure any card from him. Soon I’ll be making my cards too and you will be my inspiration.

  7. Marcia,

What a lovely set of cards! You have such an amazing talent and a unique perspective about the American dream. Sounds like a lot of interesting blog material to me!

Thanks so much for supporting OWH.

  8. Your cards are lovely, Marcia. They are not “fussy” but clean and simple. I like that. And you do have lots of color on them. Love both your “Miss you” cards. One very colorful and the other very masculine. Great designs. Great job!!

  9. Great cards, Marcia, I especially like the “Missing You” airplane on a map background.

Don’t be afraid to start a blog. Places like blogspot and wordpress have templates that make setup a cinch. Hardly anyone ever sees my blog but really I do it for myself — if nothing else it’s a place to park cards I make for challenges and class assignments.

    Congrats on being featured today!

  10. Marcia, I love your cards, you do a beautiful and very professional job! Keep up the good work, and get on with that blog!

  11. Thank you for being part of OWH Marcia! 🙂 Your cards are wonderful.

  12. Such wonderful cards! You are so talented. You will definitely make some recipients very hsppy. <3

  13. I would like how do you get started with the mailing letters. Please let me know.

  14. Wow Marcia! These were awe inspiring cards! Gorgeous and your craftsmanship is amazing! Thanks so much for sharing your philosophy too!

  15. Oh, Marcia, please start a blog! Your cards are stunning. I’d love to see what you continue to create. And not everyone who has a blog is an expert, believe me! For me personally, I don’t follow all blogs for instructional content. Some blogs I follow are just for entertainment & inspiration. Without a doubt, your cards are truly inspirational. Thank you for sharing your gorgeous talent with us.

  16. Lovely cards and colors! My favorites are the orange with dark flowers, and the thanks with green leaves.

  17. Marcia – Your cards are fabulous! Your designs are simple yet stunning. I very much enjoyed seeing this group of cards. I had a difficult time choosing a favorite from them, but I think it is the Miss You card – the colors and textures evoke the emotions of truly missing someone. Congratulations on being a Featured Card Maker and for sharing your talent with us.

  18. Marcia, I totally agree card making is wonderful therapy and it is so much more fun to buy stamps and supplies than pay a therapist!!! The 3 heart sizes on that first adorable panda card are such a cute touch. The background on the missing you card is stunning and the ribbon adds great detail without taking away from the main image.

  19. Great group of cards! Can’t believe you’ve only been making them for 4 years! If I had to chose a 1st favorite (see waffling already, since I really don’t want to chose just one.) it would be the orange watercolor/distressed queen anne’s lace miss you card. Love the background and the simple silhouette, the 2 black ribbons at the bottom finish it off perfectly, yet leave the focus on the colored section.

  20. I Love the LOVE card. I really love them all, but the LOVE card just popped out at me. You do an excellent job of incorporating color with techniques. Thank you for sharing.

  21. Beautiful, thanks for all the inspiration! What company is the airplant stamp from?

  22. Wow Marcia, what beautiful cards you make! I think you should definitely reconsider having a blog. I think you have much to teach other card makers, like me! lol Your cards are just beautiful. I am thankful for people like you! My Hero son had access to beautiful cards to send home to his family, which is so awesome for children to get mail from their daddy. So thank you for donating your gift of time, talents and supplies to make our Hero’s able to stay in touch with their families!! I am happy to say that my son is retiring in 7 months and will no longer deploy. I’m so happy that he will be home with his family raising his babies. Marcia, please consider doing a blog! Hugs, Brenda

  23. Lovely cards! I love the large heart and the thanks card shown last. Big and bold and really appealing to the eye.

  24. Thank you all for so many nice comments. You all made my day. I feel blessed to have the opportunity to share my cards with such a generous and kind group of people. From the bottom of my heart: thank you, thank you, thank you.
