Featured Cardmaker: Marlene D., Akron, OH

Hi everyone! It’s Sandy here sneaking in here to Paula’s featured cardmaker post to make a little introduction….I told you we have some changes coming up on the blog for 2013, and Marlene is one of them! Our dear Julie, sketch mistress, is stepping into a different role on our blog team – organizing skips. (Barb’s taking an OWH vacation!) So we’ve asked Marlene to join us in posting sketches! So please give her a HEARTY welcome…she’s been a great supporter and joined in so very many of our challenges for a long while – and you are going to LOVE her! -Sandy

Hello everyone and happy holidays! This week it’s my pleasure to be able to share some great cards created by our new blog team member Marlene. I think you will  as inspired as I am by her creativity. Marlene is a native of Akron and she blogs over at Cubbyhole Creations. Please take a moment to say hello here and then go see what she has been up to on her blog.

How long have you been stamping?
I’ve always crafted but stamping began around 8 yrs ago. I started with really chunky outline stamps, of poor quality, because they were only $1 and I didn’t know any better. I’ve kept a handful of those stamps, and cards I made, to remind myself that we all have to start somewhere.

Do you have a craft room or specific area where you stamp/craft?
I dedicated a small room for my crafting, but rarely use it. The lighting is horrible so it’s mostly used as a supply room. Right now I create at my kitchen table because I have good, natural light from the patio door. The ‘ole eyes aren’t what they used to be and I need all the help I can get.

What are your favorite stamp/craft products?
I love Authentique Paper, Graphic45, and Bazzill products; and I don’t know what I’d do without my ATG gun. Hero Arts and Inky Antics are two of my favorite stamp companies.

Do you have a favorite technique?
My favorite technique is sponging color on the edges of my papers, and also using the direct ink pad to paper technique. They both achieve the same thing but look totally different.

Are there colors you love to include on your cards?
My go to colors are pinks and blues, but I love using just about all the colors except yellows and purples.

How did you hear about Operation Write Home?
I’ve been a member of CardSwaps board over on CardMakers Magazine site and that’s where I heard about OWH. Lora Brinkman, our head guru for the board, periodically posted a call for cards for OWH.

What motivates you to make cards for our heroes?
I belong to the national group called ‘Patriot Guard Riders’ or PGR. Our main mission is to stand an honor line of flags at funeral homes or cemeteries for our troops during calling hours and funerals. I see what it means to the families to know strangers care, and I felt it an honor and privilege to be able to do this. When I learned about OWH I knew I could do more, and for the living. I consider making cards for our heroes to send home an honor and a privilege. I’ll never know which hero picks my card to send home, or how much it means to those who receive it.  They’ll just know that somewhere a stranger cares.

Hey Gang! I just wanted to add a note that the “Gratitude” card shown here is made with a stamp set by  Our Daily Bread Designs, a big supporter of OWH and the sponsor of our monthly ODBD Challenges. It and many other great stamp sets can be found at their website.

  1. I love your cards, the pink one is my favorite because it is so bright and pretty. The bird card and the gratitude card are gorgeous. I live in Canal Fulton so we are practically neighbors!!!

    • Hi Sherry, thanks for the nice comment! Yes, we’re just a hop, skip, jump away from each other. I have cousins who live in Canal Fulton also.

  2. I am partial to red, white and blue and I just love that ODBD military image (it’s on my wish list) but the papers combinations in each and everyone of these cards is just terrific. Thanks fore letting me share some of your wonderful cards with everyone this week Marlene and welcome to the OWH Blog Team!

  3. Absolutely Beautiful cards, I’m wondering where you got the stamp for the “Gratitude” card……..I can’t seem to find any stamps appropriate for soldiers (or anything close to what some of you have) But you do an absolutely Fantastic job on your cards. Beautiful, did I say that already? Well I mean it! I’m inspired! Thanks for sharing……..

  4. Gorgeous cards and welcome (again) to the blog team! Sketch challenges are my fave. Thanks too, as a military mom, for your role in PGR. It is an important one.

  5. What wonderful cards! You are so talented!

  6. Hi Marlene, your cards are stunning. I especially love your winter card with that pop of black & white gingham ribbon! Welcome to the blog team; it will be fun to see what sketches you have in store for us! And thanks to Julie for all the great sketches and for taking on the new role of managing blog skips! I think we have an exciting year ahead at OWH!

  7. Great cards! I love that Carte Bella line – and I am going to make some cards with those tags from G45 this week!!

  8. The gratitude card is my favorite. Love the colors and the crispness of it. I have that stamp set, too, and love it. Thank you for all you do for our heroes.

  9. Your cards are beautiful. I loved the pink one especially with the “oh-la-la” paper!

  10. Very lovely cards! I wonder about your “thanks” sentiment die cut….does it come from a Cricut cartridge? if so, which one? I love it! It’s got a young/cheerful vibe to the font! and I know exactly what you mean about the lighting…my eyes seem to need more and more light these days. Just got myself an OtteLite for Christmas and can’t wait to see if that helps me out. Can’t wait to see more creations and ideas from you!

  11. Beautiful cards, Marlene! I like each one especially the bird cards. Thank you to Julie for all of her hard work on the blog sketches. I know she will do an excellent job with the blog skips. I look forward to our sketches every week, and appreciate Marlene talking over the responsibility. You ladies are awesome!
